Whilst international student mobility/migration (ISM) has been growing massively in the last two decades, migratory movements connected to educational objectives have been taking place in a rather challenging societal context. From the severe financial crisis of 2007-2008, to the advance of populist and nationalistic forces in the political arena, Brexit, increased refugee flows, the Covid-19 pandemic and, more recently, the geopolitical turmoil resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its dire effects on the economy, ISM has been affected in numerous and complex ways.
